Interview with Jil Smith

When artist and lighting designer Jil Smith met ceramic artist Kristin Nelson at a pop-up art show in 2012, neither knew they were about to embark on an amazingly fruitful collaboration. A decade later, Kristin and Jil's beautiful, one-of-a-kind lamps are a cottage industry.

About Jil Smith:

I was born in New Jersey but escaped to New York City where I earned a Fine Arts degree in Painting from the Pratt Institute.

My next move was to Seattle where I began working in scenic painting. Later, an interest in lamps and lighting led to experiments creating custom lampshades.

My work has been showcased in many design magazines and can be seen in hotel lobbies, restaurants, high-end condos, and in all my friends’ living rooms.

The Seattle Art Museum store regularly features a selection of my shades to complement their larger exhibitions.
